Less Than 2 Months to Go Before The World Cup
Russia is set to host the 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup tournament in 54 days’ time. With soccer being the most watched sport on the planet, billions of fans will be glued to their screens in June for the month-long tournament. The last World Cup tournament was hosted by Brazil in 2014, with Germany walking away victorious in the final against Argentina. Much scrutiny has been directed at Russia’s ability to host the games, with concerns over the spectator’s safety for the duration of the tournament and the readiness of its infrastructure.
Preparations for the World Cup
A FIFA delegation gave a ‘green light’ to the Luzhniki Stadium to host the Opening Match and the Final match of the tournament. The stadium, located in Moscow, is one of three arenas that received certification for passing the international green standard developed by Building Research Establishment Global (BREEAM). The Spartak stadium also received the BREEAM green standard while the Kazan Arena received a ‘Silver’ rating on its final certificate.
Everything In & Around the Tournament
While football fans eagerly wait for the start of the World Cup, there’s growing unrest surrounding the host country. The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has been warding off talks of a possible World War III with long-term foe the United States of America. Talks with US president Donald Trump have been on-going, in an attempt to repair strained relations between the two countries.
Elsewhere, Russian football hooligans have sent out a threat to England fans, in no uncertain terms, warning them not to come to the country. The Russian Football League has had problems dealing with racism at soccer matches. Will this take place on the biggest stage of sports competition?
