Hassan Kamel Becomes First Aussie Winner at 2023 Wsop

Heading into the 2023 World Series of Poker, some felt that pros like James Obst or Robert Campbell would win the first Aussie bracelet of the series. Instead, the first Aussie bracelet of the year was won by road-tripping Hassan Kamel.

Kamel is in the middle of a road trip across the United States and decided to take a break and play at the World Series of Poker. He ended up winning his first career bracelet and $598,613 for his brief delay. Now that he has padded his bankroll, he is returning to his trip.

Hassan Kamel Wins $10k PLO8 Championship for First Bracelet

If you took a road trip across the United States, what might you visit? Some people might visit Mount Rushmore, while others might visit the Grand Canyon or even New York City. In the case of road-tripping Hassan Kamel, he decided to play a couple of tournaments at the 2023 World Series of Poker.

His side quest proved successful as he won the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8 or Better Championship for his first career WSOP bracelet. The event drew a field of 277 players and created a prize pool of $2.57 million. Initially scheduled for four days, the event played out in just three days.

Heading into the final day of play, Hassan Kamel was third in chips and still faced a stiff field that included pros Ben Yu, Chris Vitch, Maxx Coleman, and Martin Zamini. By the time the event’s final table was reached, the only former bracelet winner remaining in the field was Dylan Weisman.

At the start of the final table, Kamel had amassed a massive chip lead and held more than a 2 to 1 lead on the nearest competitor. He stormed through the final table, and by the time play was three-handed, he had a 10 to 1 lead on the field. Ryan Hoenig made it heads-up against Kamel but was facing a 15 to 1 deficit.

Hoenig tried to make a comeback but couldn’t build any momentum. Hoenig ultimately fell when he shoved a gutshot straight draw against two pair. Kamel improved to a straight, and Hoenig was eliminated. The victory gave Kamel his first World Series of Poker bracelet and $598,613 in prize money.

Kamel Continuing His Road Trip Following Bracelet Victory

For many poker players, winning a WSOP bracelet would prompt them to continue playing in hopes of replicating the feat. In Kamel’s case, his bracelet win is an unexpected bonus and just another part of his road trip.

Speaking with PokerNews following his win, he planned to leave Vegas after his victory and continue his road trip. He told them, “Just in town, get blind drunk tonight and back out the next day. I am still in the middle of my road trip and my car is in Minneapolis right now. I gonna fly back there and continue the trip.”

According to Kamel, he doesn’t even play poker that much anymore. However, PLO 8 is his favourite game, and he went to Vegas to play it. Kamel’s Hendon Mob profile would back those claims. His bracelet victory is his first live event cash since 2019, and he only has six cashes total.

Prior to his victory, his best finish was in a $500 PLO8 event at the 2010 Aussie Millions. He finished runner-up in the event. We wish Kamel the best of luck in his trek across America and hope he has as much fun in his travels as he did in Vegas.
